A Story of Patience, Heritage, and a New Record in Cave Diving.

A Long-Awaited Rendezvous

The caves of the Veneto region are more than just limestone and water; for the BAD (Black Angel Divers) Exploration Team, they are where it all began in 2018. After years of pushing personal limits, the team turned their eyes toward the “unreachable” lines set by masters like Luigi Casati. Following a 2024 record of -227m and a year of forced patience due to harsh weather in 2025, the team returned in 2026. This time, the abyss finally opened its doors.

PROJECT GOALS: Documenting the Human Frontier

Our mission at DigitalMovie.it was to capture the grit behind the glory. We aimed to document:

The Technical Progression: Moving beyond previous limits into the unknown.

The Logistics of Silence: The 5-day buildup, the deployment of safety tanks, and the meticulous whiteboard planning required for a 8-hour dive.

The Narrative of Discovery: Transforming a technical “push” into a cinematic experience.

BEHIND THE LENS:

Documenting an expedition of this magnitude required a dual-threat approach to production:

Motion (Underwater): Andrea Mescalchin followed Bart and the team into the depths, capturing distinctive 4K footage down to -120m. These shots provide the backbone of the upcoming documentary, showcasing the “express descent” and the lonely beauty of the cave’s upper wells.

Stills & Surface: Matteo Mescalchin, a veteran in action-sport photography, captured the atmospheric “reportage” of the mission. From the cave entrance landscape to “documentary-style” underwater photography in the first sections of the cave, Matteo focused on the divers’ eyes and the complexity of the mission.

THE VALUES: The Handshake of Titans

This project represents a “relay” of exploration. A pivotal, emotionally charged moment occurred when Bart Pitala met Gigi Casati in person. While Bart was preparing his descent to -292m, Casati was nearby, pushing his own exploration at Rio Torretta.

The meeting of these two “titans”—the legend who set the record in 2004 and the young explorer who pushed it 100 meters deeper 22 years later—symbolizes the core value of our project: Respect for Heritage. It was a handshake right on the doorstep of Nature’s greatest mysteries.

THE ACHIEVEMENT: -292M

The “Grande Finale” was a masterclass in precision. After hours of preparation, Bart reached the previous limit, found a new horizontal tunnel at -235m, and dove into a fifth, unexplored vertical crevice.

  • The Result: A new bottom reached at -292 meters, 850 meters from the cave entrance.
  • The Deliverables: A comprehensive visual archive including a documentary film and a high-end photographic gallery, sharing this “impossible” achievement with the global cave diving community.
